Kross's research interests had an unlikely origin. Growing up in Brooklyn, his father was a quintessential rough-edged New Yorker — Yankees cap, thick beard, expressive hands on the steering wheel — yet also deeply drawn to Eastern philosophy, reading the Bhagavad Gita and Tibetan Buddhist texts aloud to his three-year-old son. Research shows that people who are skilled at using their inner voice in an encouraging way tend to outperform those who are not.

The problem is that this valuable tool tends to malfunction precisely when we're most vulnerable. When bad news hits, we want to ask "Why did this happen?" and "What does it mean?" — but instead of arriving at a clear narrative, we often get stuck spinning the same loop over and over. This is rumination, worry, and fixation — what Kross collectively calls chatter.
He illustrated this with his own experience. After the breakup study was published in a high-impact journal and attracted media attention, it also brought a letter filled with racist slurs and threats. As a new father, Kross fell into severe chatter: he Googled the sender's address, took different routes home every day, and even stood guard in the middle of the night clutching a childhood baseball bat. Distanced Self-Talk
Kross addressed himself using his own name and the word "you" — a technique known as "distanced self-talk." The mechanism: most of us are good at giving advice to others, but struggle to apply that same wisdom to ourselves. When you address yourself by name or as "you," you shift into the role of advisor to someone else, and the problem suddenly becomes more manageable. It's a low-cost form of "linguistic judo."
Rethinking What Good Support Looks Like
Kross challenges a popular belief: that emotions shouldn't be bottled up and need to be vented. Multiple studies show that pure venting does not actually help people escape chatter. A placebo is essentially a vehicle for mobilizing belief: if you can get someone to genuinely believe something, you can profoundly affect their emotional state. The same mechanism can be turned inward by changing your expectations about a situation.
Facing a high-pressure social situation, people instinctively ask two questions: "What do I need to do?" and "Do I have the resources to do it?" A negative answer triggers a "threat response" — attention narrows, blood vessels constrict, performance suffers. A positive answer triggers a "challenge response" — performance improves. The key is that this appraisal can be actively switched. He cited research on Olympic athletes who reframe "I'm nervous" as "I'm excited" — the same racing heartbeat and sweaty palms, interpreted differently, leads down a completely different path. Moderate anxiety, reframed, is a "roaring Lamborghini" revving up for action.
All three tools share a common cognitive mechanism: psychological distance. According to Construal Level Theory, when we create psychological distance from something — whether temporal, spatial, social, or hypothetical — our thinking shifts from concrete details to abstract big-picture views, and the intensity of our emotional reactions decreases accordingly. Distanced self-talk, stepping into the role of advisor to someone else, and reappraising the meaning of stress are all, at their core, ways of deliberately generating this psychological distance across different dimensions — allowing negative emotions that feel too "close" to be examined and processed more calmly.
From "Knowing" to "Doing": The Mental Gym Philosophy
Kross's writing philosophy is descriptive rather than prescriptive — explain how the mechanism works, and readers will naturally want to apply it to their lives. After Chatter, he followed up with Shift and an accompanying workbook, organizing the tools scattered throughout the book into interactive, accessible exercises.

Acknowledging that workbooks often end up as expensive shelf decorations, Kross recommends a method combining implementation intentions and mental contrasting (technically known as WOOP): define your goal, visualize the best outcome, identify the obstacles, and create a specific "if…then…" plan. Research shows this approach works for children, adults, and Navy SEALs alike.
The question he finds most frustrating: "What are the two tricks for eliminating chatter?" — because different tools work differently for different people in different contexts. There's no universal answer. What he can do is invite you into the "mental gym," show you how each piece of equipment works, and leave the combinations up to you. The real dividing line isn't whether you know these methods — it's whether you've actually practiced them enough to make them muscle memory for moments of crisis.
WOOP is a goal-achievement framework developed by NYU psychologist Gabriele Oettingen. The acronym stands for Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, and Plan (an if-then plan). Its core insight is that pure positive visualization — imagining only success — actually reduces motivation to act, because the brain mistakenly treats the imagined outcome as already achieved. "Mental contrasting" — simultaneously imagining both the desired outcome and real-world obstacles — is what activates genuine motivation to act. "Implementation intentions" refer to translating "I want to do something" into "When situation X occurs, I will do Y."
