Late on August 18, 2024, an unexpected API ban threw the entire AI roleplay community into chaos. This wasn't an isolated glitch — virtually every site running on Google Gemini API went dark at the same time.

All of these services shared the same underlying call path: the free tier of Google AI Studio. This is the highest-quality upstream option across all AI model offerings: fast, capable, relatively permissive content filtering, and it comes with a $300 free credit. The barrier to entry is steep, however — you'll need an overseas bank card, phone number, identity verification, and a gauntlet of other requirements.

AI Studio for Anthropic

Google's designated migration target for personal AI Studio users, offering a free quota and access to Gemini. However, it's designed around code-based workflows, requires a reverse proxy to function as a general-purpose API, and its stricter risk controls make account bans more likely.

Enterprise AI Studio: The Paid-Tier Option

What went dark on August 18th was specifically the personal free tier. Standard and enterprise-tier AI Studio remain functional. They carry over the same quality, speed, and certain characteristics of the personal version — but require overseas payment capability and a Google Workspace license.

Pricing breakdown:

• Enterprise tier: $50/month (approx. ¥350 RMB)
• Standard tier: $23/month (approx. ¥161 RMB)

The standard tier includes a quota of 200 Gemini calls per person per day, which works out to roughly 6,000 calls per month over 30 days — an average cost of about ¥0.026 RMB per call.

Community Self-Help: A Crowdsourced API Distribution Model

Some developers are experimenting with new distribution channels: purchasing multiple Google enterprise accounts and reselling unused quota to the community through reverse proxies. Proposed pricing:

• Flash model series: ¥0.025/call (below cost, offered as a community benefit)
• Pro model series: ¥0.05/call

This model is essentially "crowdfunded API access" — spreading the cost of enterprise-grade services across individual users. Long-term viability is questionable, though. Google could adjust its policies at any time, and enterprise accounts face the same risk of being banned.
