The messages array defined by OpenAI (with role and content fields), the system role, the tools/tool_calls function-calling structure, and the stream SSE event format have, since the ChatGPT API launch in March 2023, been widely imitated as external interfaces by numerous open-source model serving frameworks and inference platforms, and have become a de facto standard.
