Shift_JIS
A Japanese character encoding standard that contains multibyte sequences. When mixed with encodings such as UTF-8, it readily produces decoding errors.

Character encodings (Shift_JIS, Windows-31J/CP932, EUC-JP, UTF-8) and malformed byte sequences are among the first things to break when enterprise data pipelines move CSVs across systems.
Shift_JIS and Windows-31J (CP932) tend to have edge-case conflicts when handling vendor-defined glyphs or legacy NEC/IBM extended characters, and chardet can hardly distinguish the two reliably, often returning a Shift_JIS verdict.
Shift_JIS was originally defined by the Japanese JIS standard (the Shift encoding of JIS X 0208) and covers only standard kanji and kana; Microsoft extended it on Windows into Windows-31J (CP932), adding NEC special characters, IBM extended characters, and some user-defined areas.
The engineering approach to the CP932 versus Shift_JIS conflict is to try CP932 first as the superset: decode strictly as CP932 first and fall back on failure, rather than relying on a detector to choose between the two.
