Argus II
A retinal prosthesis developed by Second Sight and the first to receive FDA approval. It captures images through a camera mounted on glasses and converts them into electrical signals that stimulate the retina, helping patients with retinitis pigmentosa perceive spots of light and motion.
Timeline (last 90 days)
The bypass strategy of neural prostheses has previously been successfully applied in cochlear implants and the Argus II system for patients with retinitis pigmentosa.
Second Sight's Argus II was the first FDA-approved retinal prosthesis, launched in 2013 and later withdrawn from the market in 2019.
PRIMA has improvements over Argus II in electrode density and signal processing, and in theory can provide higher spatial resolution.
