ASLR
A memory safety mitigation mechanism that randomizes the load addresses of key process data regions, such as the stack, heap and library base addresses, increasing the difficulty for an attacker to predict target addresses.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Modern browsers generally deploy multiple layers of protection such as ASLR, CFG, and sandboxes, raising the bar for exploiting memory corruption vulnerabilities.
ASLR (Address Space Layout Randomization) randomizes the load addresses of key data regions in a process, making it difficult for attackers to predict target addresses and thereby increasing the difficulty of exploiting memory corruption vulnerabilities.
Logic bugs do not rely on guessing the memory layout or hijacking control flow, so memory mitigation mechanisms such as ASLR and CFG are essentially ineffective against them.
OpenBSD has long enabled security mechanisms such as stack protector, ASLR address space randomization and automatic zeroing of uninitialized memory by default.
Signature scanning is a reverse engineering method that extracts unique byte sequences (including wildcards) to search memory and locate target functions, and can handle ASLR or version updates.
ASLR and heap isolation can increase the difficulty of exploit development, but attackers can bypass randomization by leveraging information-leak vulnerabilities to obtain memory layout information or by exploiting deterministic memory allocation patterns.
