Average Carbon Intensity
A carbon intensity metric obtained by dividing the total emissions of a power grid over a given period by its total electricity generation. It reflects the historical average emissions level and is commonly used in annual carbon reporting, but it may systematically underestimate the actual carbon emissions attributable to newly added load.

Marginal carbon intensity differs from average carbon intensity: average carbon intensity is total emissions divided by total generation, while marginal carbon intensity is the additional emissions triggered by one additional watt of load.
