Behavioral Fingerprinting
A technique for identifying a system by observing its output patterns in response to specific inputs, analogous to handwriting analysis. It works by sampling a model's low-entropy default responses to form a distinguishable collective fingerprint.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Behavioral fingerprinting identifies an entity's identity by observing the output patterns of a system under specific inputs; for language models, this manifests as the tendency to extract the highest-frequency default answer from training data when faced with simple questions that require no reasoning.
Reflective open-ended questions have a high-entropy output space where the distribution of reasonable answers is dispersed, and intra-group noise masks cross-model signals; whereas low-entropy prompts have a concentrated set of reasonable answers, and models with different training distributions will produce quantifiable deviations.
Behavioral fingerprint tracing requires no access to model weights and can be completed through black-box interaction via API alone.
Behavioral fingerprint tracing is essentially a nearest-neighbor classification problem, searching for the most similar matching model in a high-dimensional behavioral feature space.
Surface-level signals such as self-introduction content are the easiest for vendors to deliberately modify, while deep behavioral patterns such as default disambiguation directions and defensive language templates are harder to completely eliminate.
