CO₂Jump
A self-correcting sampling method for joint text-and-image generation. It jointly models text and image generation chains through coupled Markov jump processes, using text confidence and cross-modal attention to guide image generation. The method enables plug-and-play cross-modal consistency improvement at inference time.
Timeline (last 90 days)
CO₂Jump is a sampling method proposed collaboratively by Google, Google DeepMind, and Stony Brook University to address cross-modal inconsistency in joint text-image generation.
The CO₂Jump method was published as a NeurIPS paper.
CO₂Jump uses text confidence and cross-modal attention to guide image updates during the sampling process.
CO₂Jump allows low-confidence tokens to be re-masked and regenerated, enabling a self-correction capability.
CO₂Jump requires only one model forward pass per denoising step, keeping the computational overhead manageable.
CO₂Jump is a plug-and-play inference-stage improvement that can enhance consistency without requiring additional training of the sampler itself.
The research team evaluated CO₂Jump on three types of tasks: image editing, maze solving, and nonogram puzzles.
The paper proposes a joint accuracy metric, where a result is considered correct only if both the text answer and the generated image are correct.
Across a range of 8 to 512 sampling steps, CO₂Jump is the only sampler among all compared samplers that achieves monotonic improvement on both editing quality and semantic grounding dimensions.
Many sampling methods exhibit quality fluctuations or even degradation as the number of sampling steps increases, whereas CO₂Jump demonstrates a stable performance curve where more steps consistently yield better results.
