Credential Management
Credential management refers to the set of policies and mechanisms for securely storing, distributing, rotating, and revoking authentication credentials—such as keys, tokens, and certificates—in software systems. In AI Agent scenarios, it must address new security challenges including dynamic permission assignment, the principle of least privilege, and prompt injection.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Agents should not directly hold provider credentials; this is currently the most controllable boundary design.
The order of Agent security priorities is: the first line is that credentials do not land in the Agent process; the second line is limiting outbound traffic at the network layer; the third line is interception and auditing at the framework layer, used to detect anomalies rather than to stop them.
Traditionally, machine identity credentials were managed manually by operations, and problems such as excessive permissions, long-term non-rotation, and non-revocation upon departure are widespread, making them a key target for attackers.
Credentials should be bound to execution rather than to the Agent, and what the Agent receives should be a restricted token rather than a master key.
