Credential Masking
An output-side log redaction mechanism that identifies sensitive substrings using regular expressions or entropy detection and replaces them with placeholders before data leaves the process boundary. It constitutes one layer of defense in depth.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Version 0.164 added a credential masking mechanism in remote command scenarios, masking sensitive information when command output or logs may contain it.
Credential masking is an output-side fallback, distinct from credential encryption (encryption in transit or at rest) and credential isolation (not putting keys into environment variables or the command line).
The limitation of credential masking is that it happens after the fact; if a key has already been written to a remote logging system or leaked through side effects, it is still irrecoverable, and overly aggressive rules may also falsely redact normal output.
Credential masking needs to be combined with measures such as least privilege, short-lived tokens, and key rotation, and the industry generally regards it as one layer of defense in depth.
