Dawn Chorus Pro
An offline AI birdwatching aid that lets users record audio only while hiking, then upload the BirdNET acoustic identification results afterwards for secondary verification. It filters false positives using geographic, seasonal and temporal metadata, and generates natural observation logs with a local small model.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Dawn Chorus Pro is an open-source offline birdwatching AI tool submitted by developer Anurag in the Hacktoberfest open-source AI challenge, hosted in the GitHub repository Anurag-tech22/Down-Chorus, using the MIT license and requiring Python 3.10 or above.
The approach of the Priors Verification layer is: for each candidate bird, query its distribution range, migration timing, and daily activity patterns; if these do not match the current recording's geographic location, season, and time-of-day information, lower the confidence or remove it. This step is entirely based on deterministic rules and does not rely on large models.
In Dawn Chorus Pro's app/journal.py there is a built-in validation check: if the species name output by the LLM is inconsistent with the input, the system safely falls back to a deterministic template, to avoid hallucinations producing false species records.
The project's tech stack is: the backend is built on FastAPI, with filtering logic concentrated in app/species.py and app/verify.py; the frontend implements the timeline by hand with pure HTML, CSS, and SVG; the project includes 16 unit tests that run in about 5 seconds; and it is deployed via render.yaml on the Render platform as a public web application and a private Gemma inference container.
The developer points out that the pain points of real-time AI bird-call recognition outdoors include: staring at the screen causes you to miss bird activity, continuous microphone listening and keeping the screen on quickly drains the battery, and sound classification models have a high misjudgment rate in the field (wind and car horns may be identified as rare bird species).
Dawn Chorus Pro chose local inference for three reasons: zero cell signal in deep mountains and dense forests makes cloud APIs unusable, students and hobbyists are unwilling to pay for APIs, and uploading sensitive wildlife coordinates to the cloud may bring ecological security risks.
Dawn Chorus Pro's deployment commands are git clone https://github.com/Anurag-tech22/Down-Chorus.git, cd Down-Chorus, docker compose up --build, and after startup visit http://localhost:8000.
Dawn Chorus Pro does not replace BirdNET, but uses it as a front-end collection tool, layering prior filtering and human-readable log generation on top of its output.
The article argues that in outdoor scenarios, privacy-sensitive scenarios, and offline environments, a mode that puts AI processing after the fact rather than in real time may be more practical than a large cloud model plus real-time interaction.
Choosing a small model (such as Gemma 3 1B) rather than a large cloud model is an engineering trade-off made between generation quality and offline availability, zero cost, and privacy; the 1B model is sufficient for shorter log texts, and factuality is backstopped by external Python validation.

Dawn Chorus Pro is an offline AI birdwatching tool whose core idea is to let users only record audio without looking at the screen while hiking, and after the hike upload BirdNET CSV format acoustic logs for verification and visual analysis.
60%UnverifiedDawn Chorus Pro can call real bird call recordings from the Xeno-canto database for users to click on birds on the timeline for comparison and learning.
