Distributed Representation
A representational scheme in neural networks where conceptual information is encoded across multiple dimensions of a high-dimensional vector, with each dimension participating in the encoding of multiple concepts. This contrasts with the discrete, localized representations characteristic of symbolic systems.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Neural networks have highly nonlinear and distributed representations: the same concept may be spread across a large number of neurons, and the same neuron may also participate in multiple concepts.
Concepts such as neural coding and distributed representations have long surpassed the simple file-storage metaphor.
