DK-VLM
An improved architecture for spatial reasoning in vision-language models. Through a dual-kernel attention mechanism, it directly modulates attention weights with three-dimensional geometric information as a positional signal rather than fusing it as additional features into visual tokens, and introduces reference-frame composition supervision to train the model to update spatial reference frames.
Timeline (last 90 days)
DK-VLM scored 74.33 on VSI-Bench and 58.28 on ReVSI-32, both the highest total scores.
The core design of DK-VLM is Dual-Kernel Attention, comprising a semantic kernel and a geometric kernel, whose outputs are fused through a learnable gating mechanism.
DK-VLM introduces Reference-Frame Composition (RC) supervision, deriving step-by-step turning and heading targets from verified single-step annotations to train the model to update the reference frame.
Through its dual-kernel separation design, DK-VLM preserves general video understanding capabilities and reduces mutual interference between spatial capabilities and general capabilities.
DK-VLM's geometric kernel relies on 3D points and camera poses, information that can be obtained directly in scenarios such as robot navigation and AR/VR, without the need for an additional feature extraction network.
The effectiveness of DK-VLM's method depends on the accuracy of 3D point estimation and camera poses; in real-world scenarios these inputs are often noisy, and the robustness of the geometric kernel still needs further verification.
DK-VLM proposed the idea of having geometry participate directly in attention computation as positional information, rather than fusing it into visual tokens as an additional feature.
The paper's current results are based on benchmark tests, and its performance in open environments remains to be seen.
