Environment Fingerprint
A method of identifying the software environment of a machine or container using a reproducible set of runtime characteristics (interpreter version, libc, OpenSSL, time zone, CPU instruction set, and so on). It is used to locate environment differences between local and CI environments.
Timeline (last 90 days)
An environment fingerprint is the use of a set of reproducible runtime characteristics (such as Python version, glibc version, OpenSSL version, time zone, and number of CPU flags) to identify the software environment of a machine or container.
If any item in the environment fingerprint differs between two environments, the phenomenon of running locally but failing in CI may occur, for example due to reliance on glibc symbol versions, time zones or CPU features.
Environment fingerprints can capture environment drift but cannot capture logic errors; these checks cannot replace a real test suite.
