Forgetting Mechanism
A mechanism in which an LLM agent periodically discards search state, including session records and candidate solution history, and restarts from the current best solution during open-ended discovery tasks. It is used to break historical anchoring and escape local optima.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Common strategies for memory conflict resolution include attaching timestamps and confidence to memory entries, overwriting old conflicting records with newer ones, or having the model explicitly perform update/delete operations.
The paper proposes addressing agents stalling due to accumulated history through periodic forgetting (periodically discarding the search state, including each agent's session records and full candidate solution history, then restarting the search from the current best candidate).
Implementing the forgetting mechanism in communication-enabled agent teams improves performance by up to 15% compared with the parallel-agent approach.
Implementing the forgetting mechanism in communication-enabled agent teams improves performance by up to 39% compared with the single-agent approach.
The study suggests that it is necessary to distinguish tasks that 'require long-term memory' (such as customer service and project management) from tasks that 'require periodic forgetting' (such as open-ended search and creative generation), and to design state-discarding and checkpoint-restart mechanisms for the latter.
Local optima are a core concept in optimization and search theory, referring to solutions that are already best within the neighborhood of the current position but not globally best; common means of escaping local optima include random restarts, high-temperature exploration in simulated annealing, and the forgetting mechanism proposed in this paper.
The performance gains of the forgetting mechanism were achieved under the same compute budget, indicating that it changes how effectively the investment is used rather than how much is invested.
Active forgetting and summary compression are necessary measures to combat the unbounded growth of memory stores.
