Frequency Analysis
A cryptanalytic method that exploits the statistical frequencies with which letters or symbols appear in plaintext to break substitution ciphers. Its core insight is that a substitution cipher changes only the appearance of letters, not their statistical distribution.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Frequency analysis was first systematically recorded by the 9th-century Arab polymath Al-Kindi in 'A Manuscript on Deciphering Cryptographic Messages'.
The frequency analysis method predates its rediscovery by European cryptographers by about 600 years.
Frequency analysis was pioneered by the 9th-century Arab scholar Al-Kindi, and its effectiveness is very limited against polyalphabetic ciphers and short texts.
