GDDR6
The sixth generation of Graphics Double Data Rate synchronous dynamic random-access memory, widely used in graphics cards. It provides relatively high bandwidth, though lower than HBM.
Timeline (last 90 days)
The PS5's 16GB GDDR6 unified memory architecture lets the CPU and GPU share the same memory pool, so model weights do not need to be copied back and forth between devices and in theory only need to be loaded once.
The PS5 is equipped with a custom AMD APU, including an 8-core Zen 2 CPU and a 36-CU RDNA 2 GPU, with 16GB of GDDR6 shared between VRAM and system memory, and supports FP16 and INT8 computation.
System memory bandwidth (approximately 50–80 GB/s for DDR4/DDR5) is far lower than VRAM bandwidth (500–1000 GB/s for GDDR6X, for example), causing a significant drop in CPU-GPU hybrid inference speed.
The BC-250 uses GDDR6 memory as unified system memory.
