GitLab CI
GitLab CI (Continuous Integration) is the built-in CI/CD system of the GitLab platform. Users define pipelines via a `.gitlab-ci.yml` configuration file in the repository to automate code building, testing, security scanning, and deployment. GitLab CI uses a Runner mechanism to execute jobs, supports parallel jobs, multi-stage pipelines, and multiple runtime environments, and is deeply integrated with GitLab's code hosting and merge request features, forming a core component of DevOps workflows.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Traditionally, standalone tools such as Jenkins, CircleCI and GitLab CI handle links such as build, test and deployment.
In GitLab CI, build artifact paths are declared via artifacts:paths; after a job succeeds, the artifacts are uploaded to GitLab, and jobs in subsequent stages can automatically download these artifacts.
By default, GitLab CI treats a non-zero exit code as a job failure and immediately stops the job's subsequent commands; if allow_failure: false is configured (the default), the failure also blocks jobs in the same stage and subsequent stages.
Pre-merge verification in CI/CD usually means automatically running builds, tests and static checks before code is merged into the main branch to ensure changes do not break the trunk, with common implementations including GitHub Actions pull request checks and GitLab CI merge request pipelines.
A lightweight script can be configured in GitHub Actions or GitLab CI so that when a PR changes more than 400 lines or touches more than 10 files, it automatically adds a "large PR" label and reminds the author to consider splitting it.
An exit code is an integer returned to the parent process when a Unix process ends, with the convention that 0 means success and non-zero means failure; CI systems decide whether the pipeline passes based on the exit code rather than log text.
Tools such as GitHub Actions and GitLab CI make it easy for personal projects to implement CI/CD pipelines, simply by configuring a YAML file in the repository.
Mainstream platforms such as GitHub Actions and GitLab CI already support OIDC identity federation with AWS, GCP, and Azure.
A CI Gate refers to setting a quality threshold in a continuous integration pipeline so that a merge request is automatically blocked when evaluation scores fall below the baseline, and implementation usually requires a versioned evaluation dataset, reproducible scorers, and integration with GitHub Actions or GitLab CI.
Test engineers need to integrate automated test scripts into pipelines such as Jenkins and GitLab CI, so that regression tests run automatically after code is committed, and to understand pipeline configuration, test report collection and failure blocking mechanisms.
