Hallucinated Proof
A failure mode specific to large language models in mathematical reasoning, in which the model generates proof steps that superficially conform to mathematical language and appear logically coherent but contain unproven assumptions, circular reasoning, or other logical errors. The resulting proof looks valid in form while being mathematically unsound in substance.

Hallucinated proofs differ from rounding errors in numerical computation or obvious error reports in symbolic computation, as the latter two tend to be exposed in subsequent steps, whereas hallucinated proofs may remain undetected until discovered by peer review.
