Hermes-Android-Linux
An Android application that packages an Alpine Linux virtual machine, QEMU and an AI Agent into a single APK, allowing a full Linux environment and AI Agent to run on a phone without root or Termux.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Developer romeomile released the Hermes-Android-Linux project in the Hermes community, packaging a complete Alpine Linux virtual machine, QEMU, and an AI Agent into a single APK that requires no root and no Termux.
After installing and launching the APK, the Linux environment and Hermes engine start from the app itself, requiring no root, Termux, UserLAnd, PC, or server.
The app's communication architecture is split into two channels: the Android client interacts with the Agent through the local OpenAI-compatible API provided by Hermes; a separate control API manages the lifecycle of the virtual machine and the Agent.
The project supports streaming responses, voice, images, real Linux shell access, Hermes tools and user space, and guest storage persistence across reboots.
The project currently targets arm64 devices running Android 8+, and the virtual machine requires roughly 2 GB of free memory at runtime.
The developer positions the project as a "very beta" release, acknowledging that bugs, device compatibility issues, performance problems, and situations not yet considered almost certainly exist.
The developer wants testers to report device model and Android version, available memory, whether the virtual machine starts and how long it takes, crashes or anomalies, performance observations, desired features, and PRs that fix issues.
Most mobile AI apps currently rely on remote inference, whereas Hermes-Android-Linux attempts to make the phone a self-contained Agent runtime environment.
