HydraFusion
The AI workflow orchestration system of GitHub Copilot. It dynamically constructs an execution plan for each prompt at runtime and supports three execution modes—Single, Cascade, and Critique—to enable multi-model coordination and cost optimization.
Timeline (last 90 days)
HydraFusion is currently in research preview status, has no SLA, and is officially stated to be unsuitable for production workloads.
On TerminalBench 2.1, HydraFusion reduces costs by 67% and achieves 4.9 points higher quality compared to Claude Opus 5.
If HydraFusion discards a draft, changes previously made to the workspace by that draft are not automatically rolled back.
HydraFusion has three execution modes: Single (single model), Cascade, and Critique (review), with each prompt individually assigned a mode at runtime.
HydraFusion is only available through three entry points—Copilot CLI, VS Code 1.140 and above, and the GitHub Copilot app—and does not include cloud agents, JetBrains IDE, Visual Studio, or Copilot Chat on github.com.
On TerminalBench, HydraFusion has the same cost as GPT-5.6 Sol but achieves 11.4 points higher quality.
There is a gap between controlled offline evaluation data and the complex scenarios of real production environments, and many AI systems that perform well in offline evaluations experience performance degradation after going live.
In controlled offline evaluations, HydraFusion's selective encoding workflow matched or exceeded the Opus 5 baseline in quality while reducing estimated workflow costs.
HydraFusion's selective coding workflow selectively invokes different compute resources and models based on task complexity: lightweight models for simple tasks and models with stronger reasoning capabilities for complex scenarios.
In controlled offline evaluations, HydraFusion's selective coding workflow matched or surpassed the Anthropic Claude Opus 5 baseline in quality while reducing estimated workflow costs.
