A conversation compaction mechanism in Claude Code that automatically compresses long conversation histories before the prompt cache expires, reducing token consumption and enabling longer interactive sessions.

Claude Code has added an "IDL Compaction" feature, as well as support for longer conversation sessions; when there are many conversation turns, the system automatically performs compression processing before the prompt cache expires, in order to reduce token consumption in long-conversation scenarios.
The role of IDL Compaction is to proactively compress conversation history before the cache expires, for example by summarizing lengthy intermediate turns or discarding low-information content, thereby reducing the token volume of subsequent requests, but it may also introduce information loss.
