Immersion Cooling
A data center cooling technique in which servers or electronic components are submerged directly in a dielectric cooling fluid for heat dissipation. Compared with traditional air cooling and water cooling, immersion cooling offers lower water consumption and higher power usage effectiveness (PUE).
Timeline (last 90 days)
Immersion liquid cooling and direct contact liquid cooling can significantly reduce water consumption, but retrofitting costs are high and they have not yet become mainstream in the industry.
Liquid cooling technology is divided into two categories: direct liquid cooling (DLC) and immersion cooling.
Immersion Cooling technology submerges servers directly in insulating coolant, with near-zero water consumption and an energy efficiency improvement of more than 30% over traditional air cooling.
Immersion liquid cooling removes heat by exploiting the thermal conductivity of liquid, which is approximately 25 times higher than that of air, and can reduce PUE to near the theoretical limit of 1.0.
Liquid cooling technology (including direct liquid cooling and immersion cooling), by submerging servers in non-conductive coolant, can significantly reduce or even eliminate water dependency while improving energy efficiency by 30%–50%.
