Implementation Intentions
A self-regulation strategy in psychology that uses an if-then structure, specifying that if situation Y occurs, then action Z is performed. This automatically binds situational cues to actions, reducing the cost of in-the-moment decision-making and improving goal attainment.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Implementation intention refers to the strategy of turning "I want to drink more water" into something with a specific trigger condition, such as "drink a glass of water after lunch."
Wieber, Thürmer, and Gollwitzer (2015, Frontiers in Human Neuroscience) and the meta-analysis by Gollwitzer and Sheeran (2006) studied implementation intentions, which take the form 'if I encounter situation Y, then I perform action Z'.
The meta-analysis by Gollwitzer and Sheeran (2006) covered 94 studies and more than 8,000 participants, with an effect size for implementation intentions of Cohen's d = 0.65.
The mechanism of implementation intentions is that the if-then form makes the situation highly accessible and directly binds the situation to the action, so that the action is automatically triggered when the cue appears, without the need for on-the-spot weighing of decisions.
Even when the self-regulation capacity of the subject group was impaired, implementation intentions still improved goal attainment rates.
Implementation intentions refer to concretizing goals as 'When situation X occurs, I will do Y,' and empirical research shows this significantly improves goal completion rates.
