Inertial Confinement Fusion
A technical approach in which high-energy lasers simultaneously irradiate a fuel capsule from multiple directions, using the recoil force to compress the fuel to high temperature and high density to achieve fusion ignition. It is the scientific basis of laser fusion power generation.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Inertial confinement fusion achieves fusion by instantaneously compressing fuel, which is essentially a micro-explosion that does not rely on long-duration confinement, and in theory the device can be more compact, but it requires high-power lasers or pulsed power supplies to drive it, and repetition rate and target pellet supply are engineering difficulties.
Magnetic confinement fusion and inertial confinement fusion differ enormously in plasma physics, materials science and engineering integration, and their knowledge accumulations are difficult to directly reuse for each other.
