LLMD
A distributed LLM inference orchestration framework for Kubernetes, jointly initiated by IBM Research and Red Hat, among others. It uses inference engines such as vLLM as backends and organizes multi-machine GPU resources through scheduling, routing and caching layers, supporting multi-tenant QoS and zero-downtime operations as a production-grade open-source inference solution.

LLMD stands for Large Language Model Deployment; it is an open-source project jointly initiated by teams including IBM Research and Red Hat, and is a Kubernetes-oriented distributed inference orchestration framework rather than an inference engine itself.
The LLMD project was founded just over a year ago, and it can now provide state-of-the-art performance for agent serving while supporting production capabilities such as multi-tenant quality of service (QoS) and zero-downtime operations.
Carlos Costa is an IBM Research Distinguished Engineer and co-founder of the LLMD project.
In the PyTorch Conference North America keynote, IBM will join hands with Red Hat and Google to jointly showcase next-generation LLMD capabilities.
The industry usually compares LLMD with projects such as NVIDIA's Dynamo and KServe in the same track, with the common focus on how to simultaneously do well in GPU utilization and end-to-end latency under multi-node, multi-model, and multi-tenant conditions.
LLMD has already helped many adopters in Greece's open-source AI community make better use of their AI infrastructure.
