MapQuest
A long-established online mapping and navigation service offering route planning, place search, and map visualization features.
Timeline (last 90 days)
MapQuest now marks the locations of Flock safety cameras on its community maps, so users can see the distribution of these devices when planning routes or viewing neighborhoods.
MapQuest did not explain in detail the source of the camera data or its update frequency.
MapQuest currently discloses only static locations and does not yet involve real-time data.
MapQuest currently does not provide deeper information such as device models, operators or data uses.
Google Maps and Apple Maps have previously had similar practices with layers for speed cameras and traffic incidents, but when it comes to disclosing the locations of security devices such as license plate recognition, MapQuest is going further.
Disclosing camera locations could be used by potential wrongdoers to identify surveillance blind spots and plan detour routes, thereby weakening security effectiveness.
If MapQuest's approach proves viable, there is a considerable likelihood that other map products will follow suit; conversely, if it triggers a privacy or security backlash, it could prompt the industry to reassess the boundaries of disclosure.
