Merge Queue
A mechanism that performs final validation against the target branch before code is merged. Pending pull requests are virtually applied to the main branch in sequence and the full set of checks is rerun, preventing integration defects.
Timeline (last 90 days)
A merge queue lines up the PRs awaiting merge, re-runs checks on the latest main branch one by one, and then merges them, so that multiple PRs that each pass checks do not conflict once combined.
Only if the tests pass in the sandbox is the code allowed into the merge queue.
Anthropic shifted its strategy from "strict verification before merge" to "testing after merge + testing before deployment."
When merge frequency jumped from thousands per day to tens of thousands per day, and hundreds of changes landed during test runs, merge queue verification conclusions quickly became stale.
