MicroCast
An open-source mountain weather alert application that uses the TabPFN tabular foundation model to perform mountain storm and microclimate prediction in fully offline conditions. It supports hands-free audio narration and visual cloud-formation analysis, and is designed for outdoor environments without network coverage.
Timeline (last 90 days)
MicroCast is an open-source project that uses Prior Labs' TabPFN tabular foundation model to achieve zero-shot mountain storm and microclimate prediction in fully offline conditions.
MicroCast is an entry in the "Touch Grass" weekly contest of the Hacktoberfest open-source AI challenge.
The alpine telemetry dataset fields used by MicroCast include pressure change rate, altitude, temperature, humidity, wind speed, and cloud type encoding, and inference is performed on-device in a zero-shot manner.
MicroCast's interaction philosophy is less than 3 seconds of screen time; after the user taps scan, audio instructions are broadcast through earphones so that hands are free and eyes stay on the trail.
MicroCast's hands-free audio broadcast is synthesized via ElevenLabs into an approximately 5-second voice briefing, and automatically falls back to the browser's built-in speech synthesis as an offline fallback when cellular network is unavailable.
MicroCast includes an open-sky visual analyzer that classifies cloud morphology by analyzing the blue-sky ratio, cloud optical density, and vertical convection contrast in horizon photos, and synchronizes results with the TabPFN model.
Running MicroCast locally only requires executing python3 server.py and opening http://localhost:8000 for testing.
As a competition entry, MicroCast has not yet undergone large-scale validation in real mountain environments, and the representativeness of the reference dataset and the robustness of the visual analysis pipeline remain to be tested in practice.
