Mock Gateway
A middleware architectural pattern used in agent development. It inserts a virtual gateway into the tool-calling pipeline to perform schema validation on LLM-generated tool call parameters, returning structured error messages or mock responses without invoking real API endpoints.
Timeline (last 90 days)
The mock gateway uses the AJV Schema validator to check the payload before real code executes; if validation passes it returns a clean mock JSON response, and if it fails it returns a structured 400 error that explicitly identifies type mismatches.
Because the mock gateway returns simulated data rather than real business responses, it cannot cover the semantic correctness and business-logic validation of a real API, and is a supplement to the debugging chain rather than a production replacement.
Pydantic emphasizes static constraints at the type level, LangGraph fallback emphasizes fault-tolerant orchestration at the process level, and the mock gateway focuses on the closed loop of validation plus structured feedback; the three are not mutually exclusive and can be used in combination.
The essence of this approach is to shift schema validation from a post-hoc implicit runtime check to an explicit, feedback-capable development-time step, with benefits including reduced API costs, faster debugging, and improved model self-healing capability.
