Motor Cortex
A band of cortex at the rear of the frontal lobe responsible for planning and executing voluntary movement. It maps body parts in a homuncular layout and is the primary implantation target for brain-computer interfaces that decode movement intention.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Neuralink uses a robot to implant micron-scale electrodes into the brain's motor cortex, enabling patients who are quadriplegic but have an intact brain to control a computer mouse and keyboard with motor intention alone.
The motor cortex is a band of territory at the rear of the brain's frontal lobe, responsible for planning and executing voluntary movement, and mapped to body parts in a homuncular scheme.
Neuralink chose the motor cortex as the implantation target because this part of the brain tissue is usually intact in paralyzed patients, and the signal patterns of the motor cortex are the most maturely studied and the most stably mapped.
Current BCI speech decoding primarily relies on local field potentials and spike firing in the motor cortex (area M1), as well as high-frequency broadband activity in the speech cortex (Broca's area, premotor area).
