Object Detection
Object detection is a core task in computer vision that aims to automatically identify and locate objects of specific categories within images or video, while outputting category labels and bounding box coordinates for each detected object. Main challenges include simultaneous multi-object detection, scale variation, and occlusion handling. Object detection is widely applied in autonomous driving, security surveillance, medical image analysis, and industrial inspection. Common technical approaches are divided into anchor-based two-stage methods and end-to-end single-stage methods.
Timeline (last 90 days)
The output of an object detection model usually contains three elements: label, bounding box, and confidence score; the core difference from image classification is that object detection also needs to locate the object's specific position in the image.
CNN (convolutional neural network) is the key model architecture that makes the three types of tasks—image classification, object detection, and image segmentation—practically feasible, and its core idea is to use learnable convolution kernels to slide and extract local features, then stack them layer by layer to combine them into high-level semantics.
Traditional object detection models only recognize predefined categories (such as people, cars, dogs), whereas visual grounding accepts natural language queries, with categories dynamically specified by text, so there is no need to retrain a dedicated model for each new scenario.
Detectors are responsible for locating targets in images or videos and outputting bounding boxes and confidence scores, while classifiers determine the species or category of the target.
Object detection (such as reproducing YOLO or Faster R-CNN) requires understanding the anchor mechanism and multi-task loss, is of moderate difficulty, and has strong industrial demand.
The accuracy of data format conversion directly affects the subsequent model training effectiveness for object detection.

Complete shift invariance is not always the optimal choice; classification tasks favor invariance while object detection tasks need to preserve positional information.
