Persistent Agent
A concept for an AI coding agent equipped with long-term memory and the ability to work continuously across sessions. Such an agent can track project state over time, autonomously decompose tasks, and plan implementation paths, distinguishing it from traditional single-session AI coding assistants.
Timeline (last 90 days)
The core design proposition of persistent agents is that the agent's working state should be independent of any single compute process, and the context, code changes and task progress need to be persistently stored so that a new worker can take over.
Persistent agents extend the checkpoint idea from process-level state to task-level semantic state, saving not only runtime snapshots but also higher-level semantic information such as task progress and review status.
Accepted code changes in a persistent agent should be stored in a separate staging area and marked with review status, so that a new worker taking over can directly read the markers to avoid repeatedly confirming with the developer.
Safe recovery of persistent agents requires distinguishing replayable operations (such as reading files and analyzing code) from non-replayable side-effect operations (such as writing files and committing changes), the latter requiring precise progress tracking to avoid repeated execution.
Persistent agents are suited to long-running complex refactoring tasks, collaborative workflows requiring multiple rounds of developer review, and scenarios with an unstable execution environment; for immediate code Q&A or simple modifications, a lightweight stateless agent is more economical.
Persistent agents represent the direction in which AI coding tools evolve from "conversational assistant" to "reliable collaborator".
