ROA
The core artifact of the RPKI system: a digitally signed statement issued with a private key by the legitimate holder of an IP address, declaring that a given autonomous system number is authorized to originate a specific IP prefix. Validating routers use it to judge the origin legitimacy of BGP announcements.
Timeline (last 90 days)
RPKI issues 'Route Origin Authorizations' (ROAs) for IP address prefixes through digital signatures, enabling routers to verify whether a route announcement comes from the legitimate address holder.
ROA only addresses 'origin authentication' and does not verify whether the entire AS path is genuine, so it cannot defend against path tampering attacks.
In 2022 Meta caused a brief but widespread traffic outage due to an erroneous ROA.
Loose mode only deprioritizes Invalid routes without dropping them and can still be exploited by attackers; strict mode directly rejects Invalid announcements and is the most secure, but once a ROA is misconfigured it can cause legitimate routes to be wrongly affected.
The study finds a statistically significant negative correlation between algorithmic emissions deviation and a company's subsequent market valuation (Tobin's Q) and operating profitability (ROA).
