Routing
A cost optimization strategy in LLM production systems in which an upfront decision selects an appropriate model before invocation based on input difficulty or metadata: simple requests use a small model and complex requests use a large model. Typically only a single call is made.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Higgsfield routing refers to an access method that calls model APIs through a third-party aggregation platform; such platforms dynamically select backends by vendor, region, or load, and the same model under different routings may correspond to different available parameters, queue priorities, and pricing multipliers.
Using BM25 to route note bodies and the first three messages of a session raised the hit rate of the top four suggestions from 41% to 76%, and halved the token consumption per message.
The routing problem stems from the limitations of lexical search itself: when the user message is a vague instruction, the question contains almost no usable retrieval signal, and no matter how strong BM25 is, it has nothing to work with.
The "classification result as routing condition" pattern reduces process complexity, but it also means classification errors are passed directly to subsequent actions.
Cascading's savings come from most requests not being escalated, which amortizes cost, while routing's savings come from simple requests not calling the large model at all.
Routing is an upfront decision strategy that selects a model before the call based on the estimated difficulty or metadata of the input, and typically calls only once.
The layered architecture of a lightweight classifier paired with a heavyweight generative model is called routing or intent-recognition pre-processing, and its core motivation is the decoupled control of cost and latency.
