SIKE
A post-quantum key encapsulation mechanism based on the supersingular elliptic curve isogeny problem, once favored for IoT and bandwidth-constrained scenarios due to its extremely small key sizes. It was broken by a classical computer attack in 2022 and is no longer secure.
Timeline (last 90 days)
SIKE was once regarded as one of the most promising post-quantum candidate algorithms, but in 2022 it was broken by an ordinary laptop in about one hour.
In 2022, Wouter Castryck and Thomas Decru of KU Leuven in Belgium used a mathematical breakthrough on classical computers to recover SIKE's private key in about one hour, and the attack does not require a quantum computer.
