styles.xml
The XML part within a DOCX document package that defines all styles (character, paragraph, table, and others). Each style has a unique w:styleId and can be referenced by body paragraphs.
Timeline (last 90 days)
A w:style reference in a DOCX may point to a style that does not exist at all in styles.xml, and some export tools write dangling references.
Word itself allows deferred definition of styles, that is, a reference may exist first and the definition may be supplied later.
Styles may be inherited through a w:basedOn chain, and if a parent style is missing, parsing the whole chain breaks.
