Tor Exit Node
The final hop in the Tor anonymity network, responsible for decrypting Tor's internal encrypted traffic and forwarding it to the destination server. The source IP address seen by the destination server is that of the exit node rather than the real user's IP address.
Timeline (last 90 days)
The number of active Tor exit nodes worldwide is typically on the order of just over a thousand.
A technology blogger, by sending reports to the Tor Project's abuse reporting channel and to node operators, ultimately pushed for more than 300 Tor exit nodes to be removed.
Precisely identifying and reporting abusive nodes rather than blanket-blocking Tor exit IPs is the preferable approach, because there are also many normal users among Tor exit nodes.
After exit nodes are removed, abusive traffic often migrates to the remaining nodes or to channels such as VPNs, cloud hosts, and residential proxies.
