Variable-Length Coding
Variable-length coding is a coding scheme derived from the entropy coding idea in information theory. It assigns short codewords to high-frequency symbols and long codewords to low-frequency symbols, making the average codeword length approach the source entropy. Typical examples include Huffman coding and arithmetic coding.
