VTracer
An open-source raster-to-vector conversion library (PNG to SVG) with a compact footprint. It supports invocation via Node.js and WebAssembly, and provides vectorization capabilities including color clustering and spline curve fitting.
Timeline (last 90 days)
DnR FlatPic's original PNG-to-SVG functionality was based on VTracer version 1.0.0-alpha.3, called via Node/WASM.
VTracer was chosen because of its compact size (approximately 0.66 MiB) and because it produced the best vectorization results in baseline testing.
The author locked in a fixed set of preset parameters: color-clustering layered stacking mode, spline curve paths, maxColors 24, filterSpeckle 10, cornerThreshold 30, among others.
VTracer vectorization turns what should be straight architectural edges into slightly curved or rounded paths, producing geometric distortion.
VTracer converts sharpening halos, anti-aliased edges, or tiny raster noise into explicit SVG path segments, causing structural contamination.
VTracer cannot restore smooth color gradients as true SVG gradients, but instead cuts them into color blocks with abrupt transitions, forcing the author to completely disable gradients at the PNG generation stage.
