WanderWild
An open-source gamified outdoor adventure application that uses multimodal AI to verify tasks completed by users in real natural environments, such as cleanup, planting, and hiking. It employs points, achievement badges, and leaderboards to encourage users to reduce screen time and engage with nature.
Timeline (last 90 days)
WanderWild is an open-source project developed for the Hacktoberfest open-source AI challenge under the "Touch Grass" theme, with the core concept of turning the local natural environment into a real-life adventure RPG game.
WanderWild's product philosophy is "Minimal Screen Time," deliberately reducing mobile phone engagement.
WanderWild divides outdoor activities into four challenge tracks: cleaning up the surrounding environment, planting actions, exploration and photography, and outdoor activities.
WanderWild's cleanup tasks require uploading two comparison photos: a "before cleanup" photo and an "after cleanup" photo.
WanderWild's reward multiplier calculation is executed entirely on the server side, determined based on submission timestamps, to prevent client-side cheating.
WanderWild's frontend is built with HTML5, Tailwind CSS, Lucide icons, and Canvas Confetti.
WanderWild's map section integrates Leaflet.js with OpenStreetMap tile layers, and pledges not to display or record users' precise residential coordinates.
WanderWild's backend is a zero-dependency lightweight Node.js service (server.js) that handles REST endpoints including /api/challenges, /api/verify, /api/leaderboard, and /api/user, accessible at local port 3000 after startup.
The WanderWild system treats AI model output as structured evidence for evaluation rather than unquestionable truth, and places submissions into a manual review queue when images are blurry or ambiguous or when the model cannot connect.
The current version of WanderWild is only an MVP focused on the core loop, with planned features including an "Adventure Chronicles," a "Community Bounty Reporting and Anti-Abuse System," and a "Buddy Matching" feature.
