Adversarial Distillation
An attack technique targeting AI models in which an adversary systematically queries a target model's API at scale to collect input-output pairs—particularly reasoning chains—and uses the collected data to train a surrogate model that replicates the target model's capabilities. This process constitutes a form of intellectual property theft of model knowledge.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Adversarial distillation attackers systematically send large volumes of requests to the target model, collecting input-output pairs—especially responses containing complete reasoning chains—to train their own models and replicate the target model's capabilities.
Even without the ability to access the target model's weights, attackers can still achieve high-quality capability transfer through black-box APIs.
Reasoning chain outputs have become the most valuable collection target for adversarial distillation, because attackers do not need to reproduce the expensive RL training process and can instead use the collected reasoning trajectories as supervised signals to distill models with strong reasoning capabilities.
