Agent Chip
An in-house Slack coding agent developed internally at Monzo, triggered by emoji reactions, that autonomously handles coding tasks, code review, and question answering.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Monzo's self-built Slack coding agent Chip can handle more than 1,800 tasks per day on average and contributes over 10% of merged PRs across all engineering teams.
Agent Chip was initially triggered via a Slack custom emoji, taking the message as a prompt and handling it, and later developed into an always-on team member.
Agent Chip's remote agent runs in Pod sandboxes within isolated namespaces; the agent image fixes the tools, command-line environment, and authentication and authorization information it can access, external connections must go through the proxy layer, and only egress actively granted by the team is opened.
In incident response mode, Agent Chip joins the incident channel and automatically investigates, reading logs, viewing traces, and connecting to services and code, and the team requires it to maintain a high signal-to-noise ratio rather than outputting large numbers of speculative hypotheses.
Monzo's internal ask channel lets Agent Chip participate in cross-team information flow; it can draft replies based on knowledge sources, directly resolving requests when the information is sufficient and pulling in humans to supplement when it is not.
Agent Chip has evolved a proactive version that can monitor backend changes and predict, before the next batch of data processing, the impact these changes may have on the data.
Agent Chip significantly lowers the barrier for non-specialist roles at Monzo to participate in system building, but it states that this does not change the rigor with which Monzo develops software, and the chain of responsibility for review, testing, and deployment remains intact.
Agent Chip's architecture completely isolates the agent runtime from production infrastructure; non-determinism occurs only in the innermost sandbox, and all external boundaries are controlled by deterministic rules.
Monzo believes Agent Chip's long-term value comes from three judgments: composability, provider independence, and the continuously expanding development window.
