AST Parsing
AST parsing is the technique of parsing source code into an abstract syntax tree (AST), omitting details with no semantic effect such as parentheses and semicolons while retaining meaningful nodes such as functions, classes, calls and conditional branches. This lets tools understand structural units of code rather than plain text fragments, and is one of the core technologies of Repository Intelligence.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Repository intelligence is a collection of technologies, including vector embeddings, AST (abstract syntax tree) parsing, and knowledge graphs, whose purpose is to let AI coding agents understand the structure, dependencies, and relationships of an entire codebase, not just the file currently open.
Vector embeddings, AST parsing, and knowledge graphs are complementary: vector embeddings are responsible for "finding it," AST parsing for "understanding the structure," and knowledge graphs for "tracing the relationships."
