BYAM
A functional mode that allows developers to freely integrate third-party or private AI models within an IDE. It supports the use of personal API keys or privately deployed models, enabling developers to work independently of any single platform's model offerings.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Visual Studio has launched a "Bring Your Own AI Model" (BYAM) feature that allows developers to freely integrate AI models.
BYAM is currently in preview and is available by default in all editions of Visual Studio, including Community, Professional, and Enterprise.
BYAM is built on top of the GitHub Copilot SDK and was released alongside the new agent preview.
After the new version of BYAM is released, the old BYAM experience will no longer be supported, and previously configured custom models will need to be re-added.
Experiencing the new BYAM features requires installing Visual Studio 18.10 Insiders and manually enabling the new agent mode.
The BYAM preview supports multiple AI providers including Microsoft Foundry, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Ollama.
Developers can connect to models officially provided by Microsoft or use their own API keys to access other supported third-party providers.
As a preview, not all models support all features, and the official team has designed a "graceful failure handling mechanism".
Microsoft has previewed upcoming enterprise-level management capabilities, including administrator permission controls and centralized model management.
Microsoft's subsequent planned capabilities include enterprise-level project policy governance, more granular model parameter control, support for more model vendors, and deeper integration with testing and deployment workflows.
