Credential Abuse
Credential abuse is a cyberattack pattern in which attackers use valid user credentials obtained through phishing, infostealer malware, or dark-web purchases to gain unauthorized access under the cover of legitimate sessions. Because the resulting network traffic is nearly indistinguishable from normal user behavior, this attack pattern is exceptionally difficult to detect.
Timeline (last 90 days)
The attacker operated within active sessions using valid credentials, causing all authentication checks to return as passed.
Viable measures against credential abuse include continuous session validation, behavioral baseline modeling, shortening credential lifetimes, and lateral movement detection.
