DT-DRO
An improved distributionally robust optimization framework that uses the conditional Probability Integral Transform (PIT) to diagnose systematic biases in predictive distributions, then adapts the geometry of the ambiguity set through outcome-level transport. This design reduces excessive conservatism in standard distributionally robust optimization.
Timeline (last 90 days)
An arXiv paper (arXiv:2610.10793v1) proposes a new framework called Diagnostic Transport DRO (DT-DRO).
DT-DRO uses held-out calibration data to adaptively adjust the geometry of the ambiguity set so that it conforms to the actually observed prediction errors.
DT-DRO uses the cumulative distribution function of the conditional probability integral transform (PIT) to diagnose systematic probabilistic miscalibration.
DT-DRO converts diagnostic information into outcome-level transport, simultaneously adjusting both the center of the ambiguity set and the underlying cost of transport.
DT-DRO distorts the underlying cost using bias information obtained from PIT diagnostics, deforming the spherical ambiguity set into an ellipsoid aligned with the principal axes of the error distribution.
The formalized problem of DT-DRO admits a computationally tractable dual reformulation.
DT-DRO is proven to eliminate the non-vanishing robustness floor that exists in traditional methods under model misspecification.
The paper validates the DT-DRO method through synthetic experiments and a power outage application, demonstrating clear advantages in scenarios with structural misspecification and tail misspecification.
The effective ambiguity radius and decision risk guarantees derived by DT-DRO tighten as estimation error and approximation error vanish.
