End-to-End Testing
A software testing methodology occupying the top layer of the testing pyramid. It validates overall system behavior from input to output by simulating complete user operation paths in a real environment. End-to-end testing complements unit testing and integration testing to form a comprehensive testing framework.
Core Facts
End-to-end (E2E) testing simulates real user operation paths, walking through a complete business process from the front-end interface to back-end services, validating the result of the entire system working in concert rather than the correctness of individual modules.
The bottom layer of the testing pyramid consists of unit tests (millisecond-level, most numerous), the middle layer of integration tests (second-level), and the top layer of end-to-end tests (minute-level, fewest in number).
Timeline (last 90 days)
End-to-end testing refers to a testing method that simulates the complete operation flow from the user's perspective to verify the overall behavior of the system; it is very sensitive to timing and may suffer from flaky test problems.
Newly launched features often lack sufficient adversarial testing, and security reviews may only cover the main flow, leaving edge cases, abnormal inputs, and permission intersection zones easily blank, so the duplicate rate is lower and the probability of being first is higher.
The test pyramid consensus holds that there should be many unit tests, a moderate number of integration tests, and a small number of E2E tests, because E2E maintenance costs rise nonlinearly with quantity.
The broader the coverage of end-to-end tests, the harder they are to set up, the slower they run, and the more difficult they are to debug.
End-to-end tests verify that complete user workflows function correctly in the way a real user would, covering the frontend, backend, database, and all services.
End-to-end test assertions written by AI should be generated from actual page renders, with bare Chinese regex banned and replaced by precise role plus name matching.
