Envelope Encryption
An established encryption pattern in cloud security that uses a two-tier structure: a data key (DEK) encrypts the actual data, while a key-encryption key (KEK) encrypts the data key. This separation of key custody from data custody achieves a balance between performance and security and is widely adopted in cloud-based systems.

Envelope Encryption is not an invention of WorkOS, but a mature pattern that has been widely validated in the field of cloud security.
The core of envelope encryption is a two-layer key division of responsibilities: the Data Key directly encrypts the actual sensitive data, while the Master Key (KEK, Key Encryption Key) is used to encrypt and decrypt the Data Key.
Generating an independent Data Key for each record or dataset isolates risk, so that a single key compromise does not affect all data.
In envelope encryption, the encryption of large volumes of data is performed locally by the Data Key at high speed, and interaction with external services is limited to encrypting and decrypting the extremely small Data Key, thereby controlling network overhead and latency.
"Data stays local, keys managed externally" is an architectural paradigm that balances security, compliance, and engineering efficiency.
